BREAKING NEWS BRIEF

A note the manager handed the boy

Flavaine Carvalho, a restaurant manager in Orlando, Florida, used concealed signs to help an abused boy. Cavalho noticed the boy sitting in a family of four on New Year’s Day. The boy had bruises on his face and arms. He also was not allowed to order food.

Carvalho used a series of concealed notes to communicate with the boy. She held up a sign asking if the boy needed help. He responded when he nodded ‘yes.’ After contacting the restaurant owner, Carvalho contacted the police on the child’s behalf.

It turned out the boy was a victim of severe child abuse. The eleven-year-old detailed to Orlando detectives the abuse and torture that he has endured. The child’s step-father was arrested on multiple counts of aggravated child abuse and child neglect. Days later, the boy’s mother was arrested on two counts of child neglect.

YOUR MORNING MARKET UPDATE

When he is sworn in next week, President-Elect Joe Biden will be coming in with the biggest market tailwind after an Election Day since 1952.

Already, stocks have risen on the belief that more stimulus is just around the corner, and Biden shared a huge plan on that front, yesterday.

“You could argue this is [virus]-related and therefore what is most important going forward is to see the logistics of the vaccines, inoculations gain orderly momentum,” said Quincy Krosby of Prudential Financial. “That is crucial for the market.”

What else should you know ahead of the inauguration when it comes to stocks?

How to fix download speed problems

Internet download speed issues are annoying, especially in this age of digital streaming. But how can you fix them?

There are several parts of your home network that could act as a choking point for internet speeds. For example, if your internet connection is 300 Mbps, but your router’s ports can transfer only 100 Mbps because they’re not gigabit Ethernet ports, your whole network would then be limited to 100 Mbps instead of the full 300 Mbps.

But if you already have equipment that’s paired correctly to what your ISP is sending you, simply upgrading your gear won’t help

The age-old unplug and reboot trick can actually help sometimes, so it should be your first step in trying to fix your download problems. If that doesn’t work, try relocating your wireless router. Things in your home can block the WIFI signal and slow it down. Finally, make sure you don’t have too many devices using up your bandwidth at one time.

A HEALTHIER YOU

Part of eating healthy is not only knowing what to eat, but also knowing what not to eat. There are several eating habits that are bad for your health and could even be taking years off of your life.

Eating processed meats is one of the worst things you can do for your health. Regular consumption can lead to an increased risk of heart disease, cancer, and early death. Some of the processed meats you need to steer clear of are hot dogs, jerky, canned meats, bacon, sausage, ham, and most deli meats.

Overconsumption of alcohol is also risky and can lead to premature death. Excessive drinking can lead to an increased risk of cancer, especially esophageal cancer, as well as heart disease, liver disease, pancreatitis, and stroke. What other eating habits could be shortening your life?

LEARNING FROM THE PAST

The day that America stopped drinking for a while

Okay, let’s be fair – while today may mark the anniversary of Prohibition being ratified via the 18th Amendment, it doesn’t exactly mean that people everywhere across the nation actually quit drinking.

They just got a lot sneakier about it…

Prohibition was a long time in the making. The movement began in the 19th century with “temperance societies” that were concerned about the dangers of drinking. By the end of the century, they’d become a powerful political force. After starting their campaign at the state level, they took their fight national, proposing total abstinence for America.

While the 18th Amendment was actually passed in December of 1917, it wasn’t until January 16 of the following year that it was ratified.

Here’s what happened next…
