Fred is now a tropical depression. Will it remain a depression as it hits Florida?

Tropical Storm Fred has weakened after its encounter with the mountains of Hispaniola. The storm is now classified as a Tropical depression, according to the National Hurricane Center.

It is still possible Fred could strengthen and deliver tropical storm conditions to the Florida Keys as early as this weekend. However, the storm’s strength will be determined by how close the storm’s center is to Florida.

The storm is forecast to hug the northern coast of Cuba. Over the weekend, it is expected to turn north towards the U.S. Heavy rainfall associated with Fred will impact the remainder of Florida and parts of the Southeast. Storm surge is also a threat if Fred strengthens in the Gulf and moves along the west coast of Florida.
