BREAKING NEWS BRIEF

Texas doctor charged with stealing a vial of the vaccine

Dr. Hasan Gokal, a public health doctor in Texas, has been accused of theft by a public servant, a misdemeanor that carries a penalty of up to one year in jail and a $4,000 fine. Gokal is charged with taking a vial of the vaccine with nine doses in it in late December. He was working at a vaccination site at the time.

Authorities contend that the doctor “disregarded county protocols in place to ensure the vaccine is not wasted, but administered to vulnerable populations and front-line workers on a waiting list” Dr. Gokal has abused his position. What he did was illegal, and he should be held accountable under the law.

This morning, stock futures fell across each of the three major indexes, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average seeing futures slip 0.9%, S&P 500 futures dipping 0.8%, and futures on the Nasdaq 100 dwindling 0.6%.

It was unclear exactly what triggered these early losses, but each average is still up overall for the week.

Investors are anticipating that today Janet Yellen, who formerly chaired the Fed, will be confirmed as Treasury secretary under Biden.

Traders also saw shares of IBM and Intel fall 7% and 4%, respectively, in the premarket.

“The political reality of Washington is starting to impact markets, and it’s becoming more unclear when Democrats’ ambitious stimulus goals will become law,” said Tom Essaye, founder of Sevens Report.
