A little Thriller Thursday for your morning Brief Updates edition.

There’s nothing like looking up at the beautiful night sky. Even more so when that night sky has lights that appear to create a mysterious formation. People are speculating about what it could be and many have come to the conclusion that it must be aliens.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who has just been tapped by Democrats to run for Speaker for a seventh and eighth year, signaled a series of vague comments that this term could be her last as leader of the House.

The full House of Representatives elects the Speaker when it convenes on Jan 3. The winning candidate for Speaker requires an outright majority of the entire House. Pelosi ran unopposed for the Democratic nomination for Speaker. The GOP will run House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy,

An extremely rare white giraffe has been fitted with a tracking device for protection after poachers killed its family. The giraffe is in the Ishanqbini Hirola Conservancy in southeast Kenya.

The giraffe in question has a rare genetic condition called leucism that causes partial loss of pigmentation in its skin. Its unusual coloration makes the animal dangerously vulnerable to poachers in the wilderness. It is the only known white giraffe in the world.

Stock futures indicate more losses this morning after Wednesday’s weak session. Yesterday the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 1.2%, while the S&P 500 slipped 1.2%, and the Nasdaq Composite dropped .8%.

The market’s slide was marked by mixed virus news. On one hand Pfizer announced that its vaccine was actually 95% effective, according to its final analysis. But on the other hand, New York City announced that it would shutter its schools because of the virus.

Said BNY Investment Management Chief Strategist Alicia Levine: “This is the perfect day that describes what we’re calling the ‘[virus] air pocket.’ We have a linearity issue, which is that you can’t get there from here without going through a lot of bad news and some slowdown in the real economy.

Back in 2018 and 2019, you were probably thinking that 2020 was going to be a very special year – one full of promise. After all, it wasn’t just a new year – it was a whole new decade.

And don’t worry – you weren’t alone. A lot of businesses had the same hopes and dreams for 2020 that you did. And just like you, they were in for some pretty big surprises.

“Humans can only plan but cannot promise its execution because the unknown can happen anytime.”

The pandemic has shifted consumption in significant ways. Some habits have changed (for example, eating out versus ordering in), and hence the demand for some product categories saw big changes. For instance, WARC highlighted a 650% growth in hand sanitizer sales from the USA’s previous year. Nielsen data indicated that the hand sanitizer market grew from 11% in November 2019 to 53% in February 2020.

And those aren’t the only new emerging trends.

So, what is happening – and how are companies planning for the “new” future?

As of Wednesday, at least 50 large fires were burning in the West. Eighteen of those fires were in California. Dry, windy conditions and record-breaking high temperatures have been fueling flames for weeks.
