BREAKING NEWS BRIEF

As millions of Texans have been left without heat amid a power outage during a historically freezing winter storm, a new concern arises. There is a growing concern for people who are on oxygen or need electronic devices for their health. In a Dallas suburb, a woman who relies on an oxygen machine had to be taken to a local hospital and then to a dialysis center where the device was charged.
Approximately seven million people have been instructed to boil their water or stop using it entirely. Homeowners, hospitals, and businesses have grappled with broken water mains and burst pipes.
The CEO of ERCOT, the Texas energy agency that shut off the power on Monday, said that he has no idea when power will be restored for the state. The power was shut off amid a brutal winter storm that has killed at least two dozen people. Millions more have been left without heat. The Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) avoided a potentially larger crisis by shutting down the power grid.

YOUR MORNING MARKET UPDATE
|
The market appeared poised for a slight dip this morning, as futures tied to each of the three major indexes reflected losses.
Dow Jones Industrial Average futures fell 90 points, while futures on the S&P 500 dipped 0.5%, and Nasdaq 100 futures slipped 0.8%.
This morning, the government will issue its latest look at jobless claims, with analysts anticipating that there will be 773,000 new filings. That number reflects a slight drop from the previous week. The latest housing and manufacturing information is out today, as well.
As earnings season comes to a close, investors are turning their attention to more stimulus, which, if passed, would be like a booster shot for the economy.
“When you think about how the additional stimulus can affect the average consumer, with the CARES Act 1.0 and the second round of checks really boosting savings, at this point we really feel strongly that additional stimulus will go directly into the economy,” said Cliff Hodge of Cornerstone Wealth.

PRODUCTIVITY HACKS
|
A Most Important Task (MIT) is a critical task that will create the most significant results. Every day, make a list of two or three MITs, and focus on getting them done as soon as possible. Keep this list separate from your general to-do list.
Not all tasks are created equal—some are more important than others.
You only have so much time and energy to get things done each day. Of all of the things that are on your to-do list right now, some of them are really important, and some of them really aren’t important.
If you want to make the most of your limited time and energy, it pays to focus on completing the tasks that will make the most significant difference first before spending your time and energy on anything else.
At the beginning of every day, create a list of 2-3 MITs, then focus on getting them done as quickly as possible. Keep this list separate from your general to-do list or task tracking system.

PLANNING FOR THE FUTURE
|

There are only two things in this life that are a sure thing: death and taxes.
And no one is too excited about either of those things. Which explains why more than three-quarters of Americans haven’t even started the process by determining how much they’ll need to save for retirement. (We’ll talk about that a bit more down below.)
But as it turns out, long-term tax planning is one of the single best things you can do to boost your income during your retirement. However, since everyone hates to even think about taxes, it is often overlooked.
But that doesn’t mean you can’t change that!
And one thing that really helps to change your perception of tax planning is to stop thinking of it as “tax planning.” Then, start thinking of it as “tax saving,” instead.
