The last European dictatorship, Belarus, made international headlines a few months ago when its government forced a Ryanair plane to land so that an opposition activist could be detained. After his and his girlfriend’s arrest, videos of their alleged “confessions” were issued by the Belarus government. Many said that the confessions were forced as the journalist looked as though he’d been beaten.
Now, Belarus continues to upset the world with yet another human rights violation: Belarusian Olympian Krystsina Tsimanouskaya says she fears for her safety after criticizing her team’s management. The runner was then apparently hustled to the airport but refused to board a flight for Istanbul and instead approached police for help.
