How do these carnival-goers save a malfunctioning ride?

Thrill-seekers at a Michigan carnival may have gotten a bit more than they asked for last week when an attraction with riders on it began to malfunction. The Magic Carpet Ride “came off the blocking” on Thursday evening, causing the entire thing to sway a bit.

Bystanders at the National Cherry Festival jumped in, holding the guardrail that circled the attraction’s base in an effort to keep the ride from falling over.

One guest said that a loud bang initially alerted her to the situation.

“It was like scraping, and then it started going faster,” she said. “And then it started like rocking a little back and forth.”

What happened to the riders, and to the attraction itself?
