Thousands of American civilians are still trapped in Afghanistan as the country continues to fall into chaos due to the Taliban unexpectedly rising to power so quickly. And the group that Biden said he didn’t trust just mere weeks ago is now being relied on by the White House to get Americans out of Afghanistan safely. 

In a press conference on Tuesday, National security adviser Jake Sullivan explained the White House is counting on the Taliban to be “prepared to meet their obligations to the basic human rights and human dignity of people, to the safe passage of people, to the airport.”

Sullivan even added that the White House is “in contact with the Taliban to ensure the safe passage of people to the airport” and noted the Taliban has promised to make good on the deal. 

But why is the White House suddenly comfortable working with the Taliban, especially when it comes to the safety of Americans?
