How Twitter verified a fake account for author Cormac McCarthy

Author Cormac McCarthy, whose well-known books include The Road and No Country for Old Men, wants to make it known that he is not behind the Twitter account @CormacMcCrthy. Up until recently, followers would have noticed a distinct blue check mark on his profile, meant to signify that the user is, in fact, verified.

That user was verbose about kombucha and SoundCloud, whereas McCarthy is known for being somewhat reclusive, and his agent confirmed that “it’s obviously not him.”

Twitter officials admitted to the mistake.

“The account referenced was verified by mistake and that has since been reversed,” a Twitter spokesperson said. “The account will also be required to adhere to Twitter’s parody, news feed, commentary, and fan account policy.”

The mishap comes as Twitter navigates a clunky reintroduction of its verification process.
