28 ancient viruses unknown to science found in a Tibetan glacier

If you were ever a fan of The X-Files, you might recall the episode where Mulder and Scully investigate the deaths of scientists who found something sinister in glacier ice. The idea that strange creepy-crawlies or other icky things could be preserved in the deep cold has since captured the minds of many.

And with scientists continuing to extract ice cores for study, the possibilities of finding a man-eating parasite only grow by the day… Just kidding! (Maybe.)

Luckily, Mulder and Scully won’t have to save us from this particular scientific discovery. The viruses found by scientists in a Tibetan glacier aren’t thought to be harmful to humans — but the samples have exciting implications all the same.
