Fred slams North Carolina, leaves more than 20 people missing after widespread flooding

Nearly 20 North Carolina residents remain missing after the remnants of Tropical Depression Fred brought severe weather to the mid-Atlantic. The tally of those missing previously stood at 35. Two additional were reported deceased overnight but have yet to be identified. Thus, the death toll from the stock currently stands at three.

The search for those still unaccounted for will continue, with hundreds on missions – including members of the National Guard and Highway Patrol helicopter crews. Approximately 100 people had been rescued across the state, and 911 call records showed 2,400 calls within 24 hours in Buncombe County.

Mudslides, landslides, and several apparent tornadoes also threatened residents as the storm moved into the Northeast.
