A sunken cargo ship has caused a major ocean and wildlife disaster

A cargo ship disaster off of the coast of Sri Lanka has turned into an environmental crisis in the Indian Ocean.

The troubled cargo ship, the X-Press Pearl, caught fire a month ago and burned for weeks at sea. Some of the ship’s containers fell into the ocean during the emergency situation. Things then took a turn for the worst when the cargo ship began to sink with the remaining cargo on board.

Officials tried to tow the cargo ship to deeper waters to help avoid an emergency situation in Sri Lanka. But that move is proving costly to sea life, as reports continue to surface about dead turtles, dolphins, and even a blue whale washing on shore.

Why did the ship’s cargo cause such a disaster for sea life in the area and what does the prognosis look like for sea life long term?
