The Keystone Pipeline XL is dead after decade-long legal battle

On Wednesday, the company behind the controversial Keystone XL oil pipeline said the project is officially terminated.

In January, TC Energy paused construction when President Biden revoked a key permit. That seems to have been one of the final blows for the pipeline.

The announcement ends a 13-year battle that became a centerpiece for debate over fossil fuels and climate change.

Environmentalists opposed the pipeline in part because of the specific kind of oil it would carry. It requires more processing than most oil, so producing it emits more greenhouse gases.

Here’s what this means going forward.
