Waking reality and dreams are different versions of the same thing

Mounting scientific evidence suggests the divide between dreams and reality is not as distinct as one might think. The secrets dreams can unlock ultimately derive from the basic fact that reality is a process that involves us―a conscious observer.

We assume the everyday world is “out there” in a more authentic or independent sense than is the world of our dreams, that we play a lesser role in its appearance. Yet recent studies show that day-to-day reality is every bit as observer-dependent as dreams are.

Commonalities between dreams and everyday life provide clues as to how our consciousness operates. For example, we create space and time during dreams and waking hours alike, not just act within it as a character in a video game.
