TurboTax parent company Intuit is exiting the IRS Free File Program

For nearly 20 years, Intuit has been a proud member of the Free File program, helping millions of Americans prepare and electronically file their tax returns for free. Today, over 90% of all taxpayers e-file their taxes and free tax preparation is currently available to 100% of American taxpayers through a combination of commercial, philanthropic, and IRS sponsored methods.

Now though, Americans will have one less option to file for free. Intuit, the parent company of TurboTax, will no longer be a part of the Free File program claiming “restraints” of the program.

Previously, both H&R Block and Intuit had been accused of misleading filers into paying for their taxes and even of keeping free versions of their software from showing up in search engine results.

This is when the company is pulling the plug for good.
