BREAKING NEWS BRIEF
Image Source: NBC News Phyllis Pena returned home from an early morning trip to the store when she saw a man looking into her teenage daughter’s window. Pena’s daughter was not in the room at the time. The man, identified as 19-year-old Zane Hawkins, took off as soon he saw Pena. Pena had called the police. Police dashcam video caught the moment that Pena tackled Hawkins to the ground. Her daughter helped hold Hawkins down until an officer approached to arrest him. Neither Pena nor her children knew the suspect. “It’s not very often that we have somebody that actually steps in, puts themself in harm’s way to assist in apprehending somebody,” Sgt. Roy Welch told KPRC.

LEARNING FROM THE PAST
Image Source: NBC On this day back in 1950, the first edition of the Today with Mrs. Roosevelt show premiered. It would be a weekly show hosted by Eleanor Roosevelt. And her very first guest was Albert Einstein. During his time on-air, Einstein spoke out against the work the US was doing on the hydrogen bomb. It had been announced two weeks earlier by President Harry Truman. And Einstein didn’t waste time mincing words, either. “If successful,” Einstein warned, “radioactive poisoning of the atmosphere, hence the annihilation of any life on earth, has been brought within the range of technical possibilities.” The next morning, The Washington Post reported on the interview. Which resulted in the infamous J. Edgar Hoover starting a full domestic intelligence report on the famous genius. At the same time, INS began an examination into whether he could be deported.
